What is Girls on the Move?
Girls on the move is a joint initiative being developed by the Scottish Executive and The Robertson Trust. The programme is also being supported by the Scottish Sports Association, sportscotland and the Women's Sports Foundation.
A sum of £450,000 has been made available over the next three years through The Robertson Trust and the Scottish Executive Health Improvement Budget. Individual young women and charities working with girls and young women can access this support.
The aim of this new initiative is to increase the physical activity levels of girls and young women.
Leadership Programme
Aimed at young women who already have an interest or involvement in sport, the objective of this programme is to get these women to pass on their enthusiasm to those who are not active. This programme looks for potential leaders- you do not have to be an athlete to get involved.
The Leadership programme has been designed to develop participants to become leaders in their own communities and provides skills training, personal development opportunities and follow-up support. The overall aim is for graduates of this programme to become self-confident and skilled in leading people in physical activity, locally and on a regular basis.
The programme is extremely practical and challenging but also fun. One core leadership award and 2 optional physical activity awards will be offered and possible examples include Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Dance, Fitness and/or Football. There will also be social activities and complementary courses offered in personal development.
The courses will be delivered residentially and will either take place over two weekends or take place mid-week over 4 days
Target Audience
The programme is aimed at young women aged 16-24 who are interested and/or actively involved in sport, and wish to pass on their enthusiasm to other girls and young women by becoming leaders within youth settings in the community.
Applications from young women in the following groups are encouraged and particularly welcomed:
-
those living in disadvantaged communities (including homeless or care settings)
-
those with disabilities
-
young women with mental health issues
-
those from black and ethnic minority communities
-
those who are mothers of young children
-
young women who don't have a degree or an existing formal sports qualification
Participants will be asked to make a contribution of £20 towards the costs of the course. If however you feel that cost is a barrier to applying, this can be discussed so you should still apply.
