Thanks to an innovative partnership between Glasgow North Ltd, North Glasgow College, Anniesland College, Targeting Innovation Ltd and Scottish Enterprise Digital Champions Project thousands of people throughout the north of Glasgow will be able to get access to highspeed internet and digital services.
The 'Wireless Network' project has setup a series of wireless transmitters that will bring broadband speed digital services to the many learning centres and community resources in north Glasgow that do not yet benefit from fixed line broadband.
The full roll out of broadband to many parts of the north of the city is still someway off, so this project which utilises the latest in 'wireless' technology is a real boost for the community.
Many community groups got themselves 'online' a year or so ago through the Scottish Executives 'Open Scotland' programme which provided a free PC and dial up Internet Access, while the groups get the PC to keep, the connection was only free for a year and they simply could not afford to keep it running.
“So this project could not come at a better time” says Philip O'Hare, Digital Inclusion Co-ordinator, for North Glasgow "The Wireless Network not only brings free highspeed
digital services to learning centres, but to many community groups and clubs that struggle to find funds. The network covers the whole of the north of the city so we can make sure that just about everyone has access to the benefits of highspeed services"
The network has been in planning for 2 years and it is not a process that will stop Philip explains "We are continually looking to expand and broaden the network to allow maximum coverage; in the future we could possibly look at joining up with the other 'Networks' across the city which could see the development of the biggest wireless network in the UK"
Along with the new 'Access North Glasgow Community Portal' the 2 projects bring a whole new level of digital inclusion for the north of the city and will go along way to making sure that the community has the best opportunities to grow and prosper.
