REFUGEES AND ASYLUM SEEKERS STEP INTO TOURISM

Refugees and asylum seekers are being offered the chance to learn new skills for free at North Glasgow Housing Association.

The Steps to Tourism course provides participants with basic IT, customer service and tourism skills. Further opportunities exist for learners to study for a Royal Environmental Health Institute for Scotland (REHIS) Elementary Food Hygiene certificate and undertake a work placement.

It is hoped the new training programme, which is being delivered in partnership with Anniesland College, will help eligible participants move into employment in the travel, tourism and hospitality industries.

The course is part of North Glasgow HA’s award winning @ccessing learning locally (@ll) project, which aims to provide residents across the north of the city with wider access to learning and training opportunities.

Director of North Glasgow Housing Association, Robert Tamburrini, said:

“The provision of housing services remains central to our business but we recognise that if we are to contribute to the social regeneration of north Glasgow then we have to look beyond bricks and mortar.

“Steps to Tourism provides refugees and asylum seekers, many of whom live in the Red Road and Sighthill areas, with new skills that could help them find employment if they have the required status.”

The course will be running five days a week between 9.30am and 12.30pm until December in North Glasgow HA’s offices in Reidhouse Street, Springburn. Further information is available from Brian Davey on 0141 560 6000.
