WORK KICKS-OFF ON £5.6MILLION FOOTBALL STADIUM AND COMMUNITY FACILITY IN NORTH GLASGOW
Work has today (Wednesday, Oct 12) started on a new £5.6million football stadium and community facility in North Glasgow.
The purpose built stadium, which will be home to one of Scotland’s most famous football teams, Petershill Juniors, will have a full-size synthetic pitch with stand and terracing, and a new social club.
The Petershill Community Initiative will also include a 15,000sq ft office complex, fully equipped two-storey leisure and fitness facility, six five-a-side football pitches, an outdoor play area and a car park.
The new development will provide a sustainable community resource while at the same time demonstrating a completely new approach to the regeneration of football facilities at the heart of local communities.
The project has been co-ordinated by the Petershill Community Initiative Ltd – a partnership between Glasgow City Council, Petershill Juniors, North Glasgow Housing Association, North Glasgow College and Glasgow North Ltd.
Chairperson of the Petershill Community Initiative Ltd and Councillor for Cowlairs, Bailie Allan Stewart, who has led the project from the start, is delighted work is now getting underway said:
“Petershill Juniors have a proud history in the north of the city and today sees work start on a new state-of-the-art football stadium and facilities that will ensure they remain an integral part of the community.
“But these new facilities will not only benefit Petershill Juniors. They will also be open to the local community as well as thousands of young people from North Glasgow College and many local schools.
“A great number of local people including the many partners on the Board have worked tirelessly to get us to where we are today and I’m delighted that all their effort and hard work has finally paid off.”
Secretary of Petershill Juniors, Peter Harding, said:
“This is an exciting day for Petershill Juniors and for the members who have given this project 100 per cent backing for the past five or six years. The club was built by the work of voluntary members, a lot of whom have passed away, and it is great to see us get to where we are today.”
Springburn MSP, Paul Martin, said:
“This is a new beginning for Petershill and the greater Springburn community. Petershill are the only junior club in Scotland to have attracted this type of investment and the club and the partners deserve a great deal of credit for managing to achieve this.
“But is about more than just success on the field, it is about success off the field. Petershill is playing a part in the wider regeneration of the greater Springburn area and the new stadium and business centre will also bring a massive boost to the local economy with new jobs.”
Secretary of North Glasgow HA, John Brown, said:
“The Petershill Community Initiative is a fantastic example of partnership working delivering for local communities and I am delighted that the hard work of all those involved with the project has paid off.
“We are committed top the long term physical and social regeneration of north Glasgow and the completion of this development will make a significant contribution to this.”
