Equal Access to Employment - Information
03 November 2005

Equal Access to Employment in Glasgow is currently working across Glasgow to achieve the vision laid out by partners.  The Vision is that:

Our partners include Social Work Services, Greater Glasgow NHS, Further Education Colleges as well as a range of voluntary sector organisations.  The partnership aims to increase the numbers of people with health and social care needs entering and sustaining employment by working together.

Economic inactivity (or worklessness) is a big issue in Glasgow, despite the fact that there are more and more jobs being created in the City every day.  Recent research has found that around 110,000 (over 25% of the working age population) are economically inactive.  However, around a third of these people would like to work if they received the right support.

Our approach is not about forcing people to take up jobs if they do not want one or are not able to because of disability or ill health.  Instead, we want to ensure that those people who would like to work are able to access the necessary support and encouragement to move towards and into employment.  A vital part of this support will come from frontline workers in the social care, health and housing services as well as from specialist employment initiatives.

The survey

The Equal Access to Employment Partnership would like to hear the views of those staff, who are helping clients/patients on a daily basis, about how they see their role in supporting people move towards work.  To assist us to understand the views of front line staff we are proposing to conduct a survey of their views of employment and health and social care needs. The survey will have two strands.  The first will examine the views of frontline health and social care staff (not exclusively from the NHS or social work services) to employment for their clients.  The second strand will look at the employment and training providers and their work with clients with health and social care needs.

The results of the survey will help us

  • Develop training and awareness programmes for staff
  • Set a benchmark for measuring the success of our strategy
  • Identify areas where we can test out new ways of providing support for unemployed people

The questionnaire is being conducted by FMR Research, an independent research firm.  The survey is anonymous.  Please be assured that your answers will be confidential and no individual responses will be disclosed to any party.

The front line staff involvement

We are keen to have a good response to the survey and are relying on key personnel in organisations to cascade the information and for managers to support staff to complete the questionnaires.

Respondents will be able to complete the questionnaires on-line or on paper.

Your Support

Your support is vital to ensure that we are able to build a good picture of attitudes of workers in Glasgow so that we can begin to provide the best package for individuals seeking employment.  What we need to know from you is;

How we can support your to cascade this information within your own organisation?
What is the best way to ensure a good response rate from your frontline staff?
If you are not the most appropriate person to ask, who is?
