Alcohol Initiatives Fund
12 November 2007

The Greater Glasgow Alcohol Action Team, in conjunction with the Communities Sub-group, has decided that to take forward local actions in line with the aims of the Local Plan for Alcohol Problems, monies have been made available to set up a fund that is open to drug and alcohol forums within the Glasgow City Council area.

The intention of the Alcohol Initiatives Fund is to enable local forums/groups to identify, develop and deliver local initiatives in response to alcohol related problems/issues in communities. These initiatives should focus on alcohol related prevention, education, culture change, and protection and controls work, as highlighted in the Scottish Executive Plan for Action on Alcohol Problems. The key priorities set out in the plan are to

 Reduce binge drinking

 Reduce the incidence of adults exceeding weekly sensible drinking levels.

 Reduce drug and alcohol related crime and reassure communities that effective action is being taken

 Reduce hazardous or at risk drinking by children and young people because of the particular health and social risks

 Reduce harm to children affected by substance misusing parents/carers through improved multi-agency support to parents and children

 Provide equitable, accessible and inclusive services to address the needs of those who experience problems with alcohol

The funding comes from the allocation to the Greater Glasgow Alcohol Action Team from the Scottish Executive.

Depending on the number and quality of applications and other partnership support the number of awards may vary.  However, awards will be for a maximum of £5,000.  Applications for awards greater than this amount will only be considered in exceptional circumstances (e.g. projects with match funding greater than £5,000; unusual/innovative projects; partnership projects; etc).
