Create A MySpace.com Account
For this slightly trickier workshop all you need is internet access and an email account (hotmail, yahoo etc).
Difficulty Rating: 3/4
Myspace.com is like a Community Portal that helps make your very own webpage for FREE. It’s the best way to share information about yourself, your band, a group of friends, a club (ANYTHING you want) to a growing network of people (old friends and new!). Once you have set up your own page (which is very simple to do, just start here) you will be able to add and share photos, view other Myspace member’s profiles, read/write blogs, rate music, search for old friends from school/uni/work who have their own myspace and much more…
Step 1 – Setting up To set up your own Myspace account, click here, enter your details and sign up.
Step 2 - Personalising Personalise your page. You will notice that many of the sections require you to “upload” information like photos etc. To start adding information, make sure you are on your home page, and then click on the options, for example, “edit profile”, “add/edit photos”, “manage address book”. If you don’t know where to start, click on the links on your home page and complete as much or as little info as you want to. If you get stuck, click “home” along the top banner across the page and it will take you to your starting point.
Step 3 – Adding photos If you have a photo of yourself for your profile, or just any of your favourite photos, make sure it is saved onto your computer, click on the “Add/Edit photos” on your home page, press browse (in the upload photo box), search for where you saved your photo in the computer and select. Add as many as you like, remember and select an option if you want to show “everyone” your photos, or “only you”. There will then be options under each photograph, if you select “set as default” this photo will appear on your profile and on your home page. Play about with the settings and get to know them.
Step 4 – Changing the background This is slightly tricky as it involves copying and pasting code into the relevant section. Firstly open a new browser window and go to a search engine (google, yahoo, msn etc). Type in “myspace backgrounds”, you will then get a list of appropriate sites. Try www.myspacesupport.com. Search and choose a background you like, you will notice that once you select it they will offer a code (normally in a box) that looks similar to this.
This code is a computer language that tells the computer what design you want. Click and hold the left button on the mouse and then drag and select the contents of the box. Go up to the Edit menu and select “Copy”. If you go back to your Myspace page, click on “Edit Profile”, you will then see a list of boxes titled “Headlines”, “About me” etc. You can use any box, so click on “I’d like to meet” for example. Go up to the Edit menu again and this time select “Paste”. You will notice the code has been copied into the box. Save changes (preview if you want).
