Stopping smoking is a difficult thing to do. One of the main reasons is because of nicotine. Nicotine is the drug in cigarettes, and its addictive nature makes it difficult to quit. When you stop smoking, your body no longer gets the nicotine it has become used to and you suffer withdrawal symptoms. Stopping smoking can be made easier by using Nicotine Replacement Therapy, Zyban or Champix. This project aims to give you lots of help and support. With our help you can become a non-smoker.
What is NRT?NRT or Nicotine Replacement Therapy can help some people give up smoking. The small amount of nicotine in NRT replaces some of the nicotine you get from smoking and helps relieve withdrawal symptoms. There are many different types of NRT and you will be advised about using NRT as part of this project.
Is NRT safe?Research shows that NRT is very safe when used correctly. Your pharmacist, GP and Smoking Cessation Advisor will advise you about the correct use of NRT. It is important that you do not smoke whilst using NRT.
What are Zyban and Champix?Zyban and Champix are drugs which can help take away the urge to smoke. They are both prescription drugs, and so must be prescribed by your GP after he/she has checked for contra-indications, but they both have a good safety profile.
How long with the course last? Two Stop Smoking Advisers will run the group. The group sessions will last for one hour, once a week for a total of seven sessions. During these sessions the advisers will provide you with practical advice and help on dealing with withdrawal symptoms. |
