Next to the fire station in Keppochhill Road, stood the old tram depot (the tram sheds are the smaller buildings that can be seen in the centre of the above image). The first electric trams in Glasgow ran from Mitchell Street to these sheds. They were single deck, or "room and kitchen" trams, called so because of the low headroom below the railway at Inchbelly Bridge at the start of Springburn Road. It cost £8000 and was a five-bay, single storey brick building, with car sheds and stables with stalls for 158 horses. Only when the road level was lowered could double deck trams come this way to Springburn. Modern flats now occupy the site. |
